The track appears on their second album, The Bends, which was released in 1995 and was the first single from the album here in the States. Apparently, frontman Thom Yorke recorded the vocals after the band had just seen a show by Jeff Buckley and then proceeded to cry after the recording. Minus all that, it’s still a fantastic and beautiful song. And although it may be a hit, it’s still one of my favorite Radiohead songs. See for yourself. I got to thinking about the last five years and all of the music that has been inspired by Bush and Iraq. 90’s bands like Pearl Jam (“World Wide Suicide”), Foo Fighters (Gas Chamber”) and Green Day (the American Idiot album) have all been outspoken about current events. It defiantly belongs up there with influential tracks from Dylan, Lennon, Billy Bragg and Phil Ochs.

Conor Oberst released the searing track back in 2005 as a free track on iTunes and has since gone on to be released as a 7″ vinyl single. The track also appears on the Body of War soundtrack.

The song features just Conor playing a simple, folksy guitar with lyrics that cut through the current administration. He proves the cliche “the pen is mightier than the sword” is correct.

Here’s his performance on The Tonight Show.

Post from: The Production Side

Pearl Jam – I Am Mine

Pearl Jam

Song of the Week

This site just doesn’t seem the same without some Pearl Jam, so here we go. Vedder wrote the track in a hotel room right before Pearl Jam’s first show following the unfortunate events at their 2000 performance at the Roskilde Festival. The song then made it’s live debut at the 2001 Bridge School Benefit.

This is what Matt Cameron told Billboard in 2002 about “I Am Mine”, “It seems like it has all the elements this band is known for: strong lyrics, strong hook, and a good sense of melody. It wasn’t a really tough decision to have that be the starting point for the record”.

I couldn’t agree more. It’s a great track, and I’m thinking that it’s becoming one of the band’s strongest tracks.

You can listen to the wonderful live debut of “I Am Mine” right here.

Here’s the video, which was filmed at Seattle’s Chop Suey as a promo for Riot Act.

Post from: The Production Side

Soundgarden – Let Me Drown

Song of the Week

This is a great opening track from 1994’s blockbuster of an album Superunknown. Gritty lyrics, sick guitar solos and Matt Cameron holding it down with his drumming skills, “Let Me Drown” is your classic Soundgarden tune, and one of my favorites byt them. Recently, Cornell has been using it as the opening number during his concerts, while it’s not exactly the same, it still kicked you in the face.
