Remembering Kurt Cobain and Layne Staley

Remembering Kurt Cobain and Layne Staley

This past Saturday, April 5, marked a sorrow day for many folks.
If some of you don’t recall, it was the day that Kurt Cobain (in 1994) and Layne Staley (in 2002) left this world.
I always wonder what Kurt would have done following Nirvana; cause it seemed like the band was going to break up at some point (Dave was working on future Foo material for example). I’ve read that Kurt was going to lean towards a solo acoustic career, which have been amazing, if you don’t believe me then recall the band’s Unplugged performance.
Although some people say that Nirvana was overrated, I …read more

FYI: Portishead

FYI: Portishead

Portishead is back from a long hiatus and they should have a big month this April with their current tour in Europe, a headlining spot at Coachella and the release of Third.
Here’s the video for a new track “Machine Gun”

Portishead formed in Bristol, England in 1991 after vocalist Beth Gibbons met keyboardist Geoff Barrow at job-retaining program.
Barrow already had experience in the studio, he was a tape operator for Massive Attack, produced a track for Tricky and remixed tracks for Paul Weller, Primal Scream and Depeche Mode.
The band is rounded out by jazz guitarist Adrian Utley and sound engineer Dave McDonald.

Weezer have titled their upcoming sixth album.
Get ready, drum rolls please…
picApp_publisherId = 449;picApp_imageId = 11725;picApp_imageWidth = 357;picApp_imageHeight = 235;picApp_configUrl = “http://pis.picapp.com/IamProd/FlashSite/GetConfig.aspx”;picApp_Picview=”http://pis.picapp.com/IamProd/FlashSite/en/picviewerv1_1.swf”;picapp_numberOfLine=2;ImageServe();
It’s self-titled!
The band’s third self-titled album will hit shelves on June 17 and was co-produced by a guy named Rick Rubin.
Hopefully, this will be better than Weezer’s last couple of albums.

Radiohead – Fake Plastic Trees

Radiohead – Fake Plastic Trees

What a great song by Radiohead!
The track appears on their second album, The Bends, which was released in 1995 and was the first single from the album here in the States.
Apparently, frontman Thom Yorke recorded the vocals after the band had just seen a show by Jeff Buckley and then proceeded to cry after the recording.
Minus all that, it’s still a fantastic and beautiful song. And although it may be a hit, it’s still one of my favorite Radiohead songs.
See for yourself.

Foo Fighters, STP and Nine Inch Nails at Virgin Festival

Foo Fighters, STP and Nine Inch Nails at Virgin Festival

It’s a 90’s fan dream line-up!
This year’s Virgin Mobile Festival at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, MD will be headlined by three 90’s heavyweights, which include the Foo Fighters, Stone Temple Pilots and Nine Inch Nails.
This is almost too good to be true.
Also headlining the festival, which takes place on August 9-10, will be Jack Johnson and Kanye West. The full line-up is expected within the next couple of weeks.

Scott Weiland Out of Velvet Revolver, Major STP Announcement

Scott Weiland Out of Velvet Revolver, Major STP Announcement

Velvet Revolver has made a not so shocking announcement today.
The band announced that they have booted frontman Scott Weiland from the group.
picApp_publisherId = 449;picApp_imageId = 11276;picApp_imageWidth = 330;picApp_imageHeight = 504;picApp_configUrl = “http://pis.picapp.com/IamProd/FlashSite/GetConfig.aspx”;picApp_Picview=”http://pis.picapp.com/IamProd/FlashSite/en/picviewerv1_1.swf”;picapp_numberOfLine=2;ImageServe();
Here’s what Slash had to say: “This band is all about its fans and its music and Scott Weiland isn’t 100% committed to either.” Slash added, “Among other things, his increasingly erratic onstage behavior and personal problems have forced us to move on.”
If you’ve been following the news on VR in the last couple of weeks, then this is not a surprise move.
In related news, Weiland and the members of STP …read more

R.E.M. – Accelerate

R.E.M. – Accelerate

Growing up in the 90’s it was hard to ignore R.E.M.
Afterall, the band released back to back classics with 1991’s Out of Time and 1992’s Automatic for the People, only to be followed up by the 1994 rocker Monster.
Then, the Athens legends began a slow descent.
In retrospect, 1996’s New Adventures in Hi-Fi is actually a great album, but was hard to realize that then after the departure of drummer Bill Berry and the following releases.
Up from 1998, Reveal from 2001 and Around the Sun from 2004 are, for the most part, lackluster albums that many have forgotten.
Long story short, I …read more

Nirvana Is Sold Out Again…

Nirvana Is Sold Out Again…

Antimusic is reporting that Nirvana’s breakthrough hit “Smells Like Teen Spirit” will be used in upcoming Right Guard ads for their new line of spray and roll-on deodorants entitled “Teen Spirit”.
Will this exploitation of Nirvana’s music ever end?
This is just another reason why Courtney Love is a horrible person.
This is also April Fool’s Day.
