Snakes, Wolves, & Tears: Danzig II: Lucifuge

lucifuge.jpgOkay, so I grew up on a steady diet of punk rock, one band in particular being The Misfits. If you’re not aware of them, then you’ve probably been living in a cave or have never met a studded-belt-wearing punk rock kid in your life.

The band is known for their fast & raw punk rock sound, and of course their famous lyrics about b-movie horror. They even have a signature character ripped from an old serial known as “The Crimson Ghost”.

The band’s lead singer Glenn Danzig would go on to front other bands such as “Samhain” before sticking with just “Danzig”. You might recall the MTV video for “Mother”, making the song popular years after it’s initial release.

If you’re really looking for some of Danzig’s best work though, I’d check out his second album, Lucifuge. It’s a well produced, straight up hard rock album. Probably the most accessible work from the man who likes to sing about (these are actual track names) “Snakes of Christ”, “Long Way Back From Hell” and the tear-jerker ‘Blood and Tears”.

So if you need a loud and heavy rock album for the car ride home, check it out. If you’re a Misfits fan, be prepared for some polish.

well said. I just re-bought this CD not too far back. The first one I bought was scratched beyond playability years ago. Of the first four of “Danzig” this is to me the best. I love the whole bluesy kick to this record and Blood and tears is probably my favorite Danzig song.

1 was great and three had some great moments, but 4 didn’t do as much for me. Everything beyond that, produced by Glenn, himself, is just…bad.

The Misfits America Psycho was more metal than punk, and it was cleaned up and sounded pretty good with Graves on vocals…but then along came famous monsters and took a big dump on the whole legacy. If you haven’t already check out Project 1950. Even though it’s Jerry Only with a few other washed up punkers carrying the misfits name, it has some cool 50’s covers in Misfits style sound. Jerry didn’t do too bad on the vocals either.

I did a discography of Danzig a month or so back to include the lost tracks. Check it out if you get a chance.
